Why Gotham FC Fans Should Remain Optimistic Despite Recent Departures

In recent weeks, Gotham FC has seen a wave of departures that have left some fans concerned about the direction and culture of the club. However, there are several reasons why supporters should remain optimistic and trust in the long-term vision of the organization. While change can be unsettling, it’s important to recognize that these moves are part of a necessary reset to build a sustainable and competitive future.

The 2024 Roster Build Was Unsustainable

Last season, Gotham FC assembled a star-studded roster that was dubbed a super team. However, the reality is that such a build was neither sustainable nor cost-effective in the long run. The team’s bench was filled with players who could have been starters on any other club, which speaks to the incredible depth Gotham had. This was necessary in 2024 as Gotham played in more games than any other NWSL team across many competitions. While this depth contributed to the team’s success in 2024, maintaining such a roster was financially and logistically challenging.

In 2025, Gotham has kept 9 of 11 starters from the Semi-final penalty kick loss to the Spirit and brought in depth of young, dynamic play makers and difference makers. Lilly Reale is a potential top 5 draft pick if there was still a draft. She is a solid center back with pace and strength. Should be able to fill in right away and the speed and physicality of this level should not phase her. On offense, despite the talent Gotham had a clear issue creating high quality chances. They brought in a host of attacking talent that create chance. Who better than the leading assist creator in college in Sarah Schupansky? The type of players the club brought in should be able to adapt to the system and create chances for Esther and Gabi Portilho.

A Promise Kept by Yael Averbuch

General Manager Yael Averbuch made a promise early in her tenure: if players wanted to leave, she would honor their wishes. This commitment to player agency and respect is a hallmark of a healthy club culture. The recent departures are a testament to Averbuch keeping her word, demonstrating that Gotham FC values its players as individuals, not just assets. This approach fosters trust and respect, which will attract top talent in the future.

Simply put, the players that are here, want to be here. Not that all players that left wanted to leave. They were afforded more money and playing opportunities.

Strong Leadership Remains

Despite the changes, Gotham FC still boasts a core of experienced leaders who can guide the team through this transition. These players bring not only skill on the field but also the intangibles—mentorship, resilience, and a winning mentality—that are crucial for building a cohesive squad. Players such an Tierna Davison, Emily Sonnett, and Nealy Martin. Their presence ensures that the team’s identity and culture remain intact, even as new faces join the roster.

Roster Flexibility and Financial Freedom

One of the most exciting aspects of this reset is the newfound flexibility it provides. With roster spots and salary cap space now available, Gotham FC is positioned to make multiple strategic moves in the upcoming transfer windows. Despite the changes, Gotham has kept 9 of 11 starters from the semi final loss to the Spirit. Replacing Delanie Sheehan with National team player Jaelin Howell and replacing Yazmeen Ryan with one of the best players in the world, Gabi Portilho. This also opens the door for fresh talent, new energy, and exciting additions from young players that can reinvigorate the squad. Gotham has 5 rookies to integrate. All high ceiling players that the team can build with. Fans can look forward to a dynamic rebuild that brings both competitiveness and excitement back to the club.

A Bright Future Ahead

Gotham may have found a happy medium. Balancing the star heavy roster and creating their own stars in the process.

For Gotham FC fans, the message is clear: trust the process. Stay tuned—this is just the beginning of a new chapter for Gotham FC.
