This is the first part of a multi part series on how you can start a women's sports podcast.
Introduction
In this first episode of my Foundational Steps series, we'll be exploring the importance of defining your mission and vision for your women's sports podcast. We'll also discuss what makes your perspective unique and how to identify your ideal listener.
What is your mission?
Your mission is the reason why you're starting a podcast. What do you hope to achieve with your show? What topics do you want to cover? Who do you want to reach?
Here are a few questions to ask yourself:
What are you passionate about?
What are you knowledgeable about?
What do you want to learn more about?
What do you want to share with others?
Once you know your mission, you can start to develop your vision.
What is your vision?
Your vision is your long-term goal for your podcast. What do you want to achieve with your show? What kind of impact do you want to make?
Here are a few questions to ask yourself:
What do you want your podcast to be known for?
What do you want your listeners to feel when they listen to your show?
What do you want your legacy to be?
Once you know your mission and vision, you can start to develop your podcast's content and format.
What makes your perspective unique?
What is it about your perspective that makes you the perfect person to host a women's sports podcast? What unique insights or experiences can you bring to the table?
Here are a few questions to ask yourself:
What are your personal experiences with women's sports?
What are your professional experiences with women's sports?
What are your unique perspectives on women's sports?
Once you know what makes you unique, you can start to develop your podcast's brand.
Who is your ideal listener?
Who are you trying to reach with your podcast? What are their interests? What are their demographics?
Here are a few questions to ask yourself:
Who is your target audience?
What are their interests?
What are their demographics?
What are their listening habits?
Once you know who your ideal listener is, you can start to develop your podcast's content and format.
What is your podcasting superpower?
This is where you identify your unique selling proposition (USP). What can you offer that no one else can? What makes your podcast different from all the others?
Consider your background:Â Are you a former athlete? Do you have a unique perspective as a coach, sports journalist, or fan?
Think about your personality:Â Are you funny, insightful, passionate?
Focus on your content:Â What kind of support system can you build? Do you plan to offer exclusive interviews? In-depth analysis? A focus on a specific niche within women's sports?
Identifying your podcasting superpower will help you differentiate yourself from the competition and attract a loyal audience.
Conclusion
Defining your mission, vision, and ideal listener is the first step to creating a successful women's sports podcast. Once you know what you want to achieve with your show, you can start to develop your content and format.

A couple of parting thoughts on podcasting for women's sports:
Women's sports are a niche. If you decide to cover a specific women's sport then you are a niche inside of a niche. If you decided you wanted to cover a specific team in a specific sport. Then you are a niche, inside of a niche, inside of a niche. And so on. I need you to be prepared that you are going to work really hard and it will take a lot of resources to put out a quality show. Generally, (Not always) you will be working very hard and putting out a show for a handful of listeners. It takes time to build an audience. Don't expect to be making money anytime soon, if at all.
You are going to suck. You are going to make mistakes. You are going to put out in retrospect some pretty awful episodes. That is OK. No one is expecting you to be perfect. There is so much to learn from audio, editing, and marketing. There is a lot that goes into a successful podcast. It takes a village. You will learn a long the way and continue to improve.
This is why you need to have a vision and a mission. Something that will drive you to come back over and over and put in the hard work. My mission was to help the sport of women's soccer grow and telling the stories of players that don't often get their stories told. What is you mission?
Stay tuned. There is a lot to cover. We will talk about and not limited to equipment on a budget, branding, free alternatives to adobe, structure, consistency, ethics, public relations, brand voice, social media content ideas, how to engage fans on social media, how to get guests, how to structure interviews, how to break news, women's sports from a social science perspective, issues within women sports, etc.
